Approval for foreign investment in Australia

Getting approval for foreign investment in Australia

The Australian Government welcomes foreign investment.  Certain investments are subject to review under Australia’s foreign investment review framework.

Screening process

The Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) reviews foreign investment proposals on a case-by-case basis. This is to ensure the investment is not contrary to the national interest or national security.  The FIRB provides advice to the Treasurer who has ultimate decision power.

Your obligations as a foreign investor

Investors need to be mindful of:

  • their compliance obligations following a decision
  • Australia’s regulatory environment and abide by all relevant laws and requirements.

Find out more about the review process

The FIRB website has guidance about foreign investment in Australia, including:

  • Australia’s foreign investment policy. This sets out who needs foreign investment approval and how proposals are assessed
  • monetary thresholds that inform whether a foreign investment needs review
  • fact sheets that set out compliance obligations for foreign investors
  • information about how to apply.
