Professor Chris Marsden – Education and research
From the United Kingdom
“Australia is a major innovator in responsive regulation and co-regulation of technology, which makes Monash an excellent professional fit. Personally, we wanted to live the extraordinarily diverse and vibrant lifestyle that Melbourne provides to people, whatever their cultural background, and the spectacular scenery of the Victorian coast.”
Professor Chris Marsden is an expert in the regulation of artificial intelligence and the internet. He has written and presented major research reports for both the European Parliament (2019) and Commonwealth of Nations (2020) on election disinformation and cybersecurity. These reports have alerted Parliamentarians and policymakers internationally to the dangers of disinformation (deliberate fake news) to democracy, and the co-regulatory reforms needed to begin to tackle those problems.
Professor Marsden’s research will contribute to improving the regulation of AI and increasing people’s trust in new technologies – in turn this will affect the speed, scale and scope of the adoption of AI.
He has been appointed Professor of Artificial Intelligence, Technology and the Law at Monash University, the first such post in Australia.
