0:01 In Australia right now, we're entering a new evolution in the fintech space. 0:07 It's vibrant, it's innovative, it's disruptive and we're seeing so many Australian 0:13 fintech's make an impact on the global stage. 0:18 I came over to Australia in November 2019, 0:22 I was already starting to work on a new idea with my co-founder in terms of 0:26 building an SME challenge bank. We were looking at 0:29 different locations. As I spent more time here and I got to 0:33 meet more people within the ecosystem, I realised what an amazing opportunity 0:37 Australia actually had. 0:43 When it comes to support from government, I've seen 0:46 a range of initiatives, from commercialisation grants, 0:50 to research and development tax incentives. 0:53 I've also seen direct approaches from the government to the fintech community 0:58 in asking "how else can we help you? What else would make a difference?" 1:02 When I landed here, I actually contacted the Global Talent 1:05 visa program, which gave me a fast track route into 1:08 permanent residency. 1:09 We were also fortunate enough to win the MVP grant which is helping us build our initial platform. 1:17 Honestly it's impossible to find coffee like this anywhere else in the world. 1:21 There's a great pool of talent over here. 1:24 It's incredibly tight-knit and when I actually landed 1:27 I didn't know anybody. But I was able to message 1:31 individuals on LinkedIn and they're immediately there, available to help us, 1:35 in terms of understanding where to access the government grants or 1:38 which VCs to go speak to. We have people with very deep skills 1:43 in technology, in data, in marketing, in digital propositions, so you're never 1:49 really in it alone. You can 1:50 reach out to anyone and if they can help you they will. 1:56 With open banking now just emerging, it's an incredibly exciting opportunity. 2:00 Although the UK was the first in the globe to put this regulation out into the open 2:04 market, the benefit that Australia has had is 2:06 being able to see some of the limitations. 2:09 So with consumer data rights over here, you know CDR, 2:12 it doesn't just mandate specifically banking data, but it's actually 2:16 all utility data. Which is a far more exciting opportunity 2:20 for new technology players such as us, that actually depend on that data. 2:25 Australia is a great market to test new digital propositions. 2:30 We have such a diverse population, that if you're looking for 2:34 a test market that closely represents pretty much 2:37 most other markets around the world, 2:39 you'll find that validation here in Australia. 2:46 Living and working in Australia is incredible. I wake up every 2:50 day and I have to pinch myself because I 2:52 get to go out for a swim or a surf before I 2:55 then roll 20 other yards into my office. 2:59 In many ways Australia is hidden from the rest of the world, 3:02 but it's actually a place where you don't have to hide who you are 3:06 or the things that you love - you can just be yourself. 3:09 Without shadow of doubt, you've got all of the core ingredients to build a 3:13 world-beating start-up right here on these shores.
